Ruya Norton joined Outreach Strategies in September, 2014, through a partnership with American University, where she is pursuing a master’s degree in Strategic Communication. At OS, Ruya supports new and existing clients with their strategic messaging and advocacy efforts. She is responsible for developing targeted media lists, drafting news articles, monitoring issue coverage in the media, and crafting informed messaging recommendations. Ruya regularly pitches the media on behalf of OS clients.
Previously, Ruya worked for nonprofits dedicated to girls education, military officer benefits and healthy childhood development. Most recently, she spent two and a half years at Maasai Girls Education Fund (MGEF) as their Communications Associate. In this role, Ruya built a thriving social media presence from the ground up, bringing new donor and foundation support to critical community education programs in Kenya. During her time at MGEF, she built meaningful relationships with strategic partners and secured funding from a range of philanthropic entities. Versed in basic HTML, she also maintained the organization’s website and blog, two essential outreach and development tools for a small nonprofit with global scope.
Ruya has volunteered her digital communication expertise for LaunchProgress, a nonprofit that works to increasing the number of young progressives in local and national office.
Ruya earned her B.A. from Mount Holyoke College with concentrations in religion, gender studies, and health.
