OS and The Johnson Foundation at Wingspread Named Finalists For Public Affairs Award

Joint Effort to Promote Financing Sustainable Water Infrastructure Recognized for Leadership in Field

Washington, D.C. – Outreach Strategies (OS) and The Johnson Foundation at Wingspread’s elevation of a landmark report on financing sustainable water infrastructure has been acknowledged as a finalist for the PR News Nonprofit PR Awards. The multi-faceted communications campaign is being recognized for breaking through in the area of Public Affairs and Issues Management with the release of “Financing Sustainable Water Infrastructure” (FSWI), a report produced through a collaboration among The Johnson Foundation, Ceres and American Rivers to identify a set of policy recommendations related to infrastructure financing. The FSWI campaign is successfully elevating the issue of water infrastructure to national prominence and raising awareness about the need to address the nation’s crumbling freshwater infrastructure.  The campaign was also designed to convey to members of Congress the pressing need to replace dilapidated infrastructure with more dynamic, efficient and sustainable water infrastructure systems and to fund them accordingly. "We're delighted to be working with The Johnson Foundation at Wingspread to increase visibility and understanding around our nation's crumbling freshwater infrastructure," said Tad Segal, President of Outreach Strategies. "This award nomination is testament to the terrific work and long-term efforts of the Foundation to convene and engage a diverse group of stakeholders committed to identifying the scope and scale of our freshwater challenges and sound the siren that our nation's freshwater systems need serious attention.” With the release of the FSWI report, OS and the Foundation sought to ensure the findings informed the work of those members of Congress addressing water and infrastructure financing issues. As part of this, OS and the Foundation secured an opportunity for Congressional testimony and produced an interactive iBook, which highlighted findings from the report and collected video, photos and media coverage of the Foundation’s efforts. The Johnson Foundation at Wingspread began its work on sustainable water issues in 2008. In 2010, after two years of research and convening, it released Charting New Waters, a landmark call to action to ensure the quality and abundance of U.S. freshwater. The report identified the nation’s aging, crumbling water infrastructure as a core root of the problems that factor in to a looming water crisis in our country. OS has been coordinating strategic communications elements around the effort since its inception. Outreach Strategies (OS) is a communications and public affairs firm dedicated to promoting sustainability and positive environmental outcomes at the national and international levels.
